Description

A porcelain bell-shaped decanter of Bell’s Old Scotch Whisky, attributed to Wade Ceramics. The body is finished in a cream glaze with tan and brown banded decoration to the foot and shoulder, accented with 22-carat gold gilding. The front of the decanter features a transfer-printed label reading BELLS Old Scotch Whisky 100% SCOTCH WHISKIES DISTILLED BLENDED AND BOTTLED IN SCOTLAND Arthur Bell and Sons plc PERTH SCOTLAND. The decanter retains its original gold-toned stopper, which remains sealed under a clear cellulose wrapper. The item is housed in its original orange cardboard presentation tube with matching labels and a red cord carrying handle. This lot is accompanied by an original typed letter on The Benevolent (The Wine and Spirit Trades’ Benevolent Society) letterhead, dated 8th May 1990. The letter is addressed to the residents and staff of The Vintry in Eastbourne and is signed by Chief Executive W.R. Donaldson. It explains that this specific decanter was commissioned as a unique collector’s item, not commercially available in the United Kingdom at the time, to commemorate a visit by the Lady Mayoress of London on 4th May 1990.
