Lot 53:
Description
A 19th-century Continental school landscape executed in watercolour and bodycolour on paper. The work depicts a riverside city scene featuring prominent twin-towered cathedral architecture, suggestive of the Grossmünster in Zurich, Switzerland. The composition includes various figures engaged on the riverbanks and in small rowing boats on the water. A multi-arched stone bridge connects the banks in the middle distance. The scene is rendered in a soft, atmospheric style with gouache highlights used to define the architectural features and figures. The painting is presented in a cream-coloured mount and a gilt-beaded wooden frame. No signature or inscription is visible on the front or the sealed verso. 46x31cm
