Description
A set of Japanese porcelain demitasse coffee or chocolate wares produced by Noritake. The collection features an Oriental landscape pattern within central circular and oval cartouches, depicting a traditional Japanese scene with a pagoda, a bridge, and a small boat on water. These scenes are framed by large floral sprays of peonies and chrysanthemums. The decoration is executed with transfer printing and finished with hand-painted gold highlights and small touches of red enamel on the pagoda roofs. The rims, handles, and saucer borders are finished with a wide band of apricot-coloured luster glaze and gilded edges. The set includes a tall, slender coffee pot with an inset lid, an open sugar bowl, a cream jug, and several matching cups and saucers. The base of the saucers bears a green backstamp featuring the word Noritake in cursive script above a circular logo containing a stylized M symbol, with the words MADE IN JAPAN curving around the base. This mark was used by the Morimura Brothers for the export market, dating this set to the early 20th century, approximately 1918 through the 1930s. Teapot 17cm tall
